the ethical implications of indigenous identity fraud within STEM

Pretendianism is an act of identity fraud, where there is a claim of indigenous ancestry in a settler’s lineage for them to reap “benefits” given to First Nation communities.

this recent phenomenon results in a poor reflection of the actual number of indigenous peoples in secondary institutions, since spaces created specifically to provide opportunities to systemically underprivileged groups are being given away, largely due to stigmatism and ignorance towards Canada’s First Nations and Inuit.
